The Indonesian Government has broken ground on Mayapada Hospital Nusantara in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan.

The hospital will be the second in North Penajam Paser and will be designed as a green hospital, with a focus on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability following the 'forest city' concept.

It will include green spaces and a 'healing garden' for patient recovery as part of this.

Mayapada Hospital will collaborate with international partners to help address complex health conditions for the community, government, insurance and both domestic and foreign companies.

Once completed, the facility will offer services for cardiac, stroke, emergency and orthopaedic cases.

The hospital is expected to be ready for operation in the second half of next year.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo anticipates that the hospital will address capital outflow by reducing the need for Indonesians to seek medical treatment abroad.

Widodo said: "I am sure that with the experience that Mayapada Hospital and its international partners have, they will be able to provide professional services, handling complex health cases for the community, for the government, for insurance and for domestic and foreign companies.

"Every year, our people take their money abroad just for treatment. We hope that with the establishment of Mayapada Hospital in the archipelago, we can reduce this as much as possible."

The ground-breaking for Hermina Nusantara Hospital is currently also taking place at the same site as the Mayapada Hospital.

Hermina Hospital director Dr Tribowo Hasmoro has invested IDR650bn ($41m) in the hospital, which will offer emergency care, a trauma centre, orthopaedics, maternal and child perinatology, child growth and development and nephrology among other services

In September this year, a ground-breaking ceremony for the Abdi Waluyo Nusantara Hospital was held in the Archipelago Capital in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan Province.
