The Mays Cancer Center in Texas, US is set to complete a $28m overhaul on 20 December 2023, a project that has been ongoing since over two years.

This project was aimed at improving patient care and supporting the new Multispecialty and Research Hospital, scheduled to begin operations in December 2024.

The hospital will focus on biomedical research, patient care, and medical education, particularly for diseases like cancer in the region.

This cancer centre refurbishment covered over 35 phases across multiple floors, with enhancements such as larger corridors, doors, improved building circulation, new clinic spaces with added furniture, and improved accessibility with parking and ramps.

Additional improvements within the Grossman Building include a new emergency exit, a food service venue, and upgraded public areas.

The Capital Projects Office oversaw the design and construction contracts for the project, collaborating with Alta Architects and Vaughn Construction as the construction manager as well as general contractor.

Vaughn has been working with the health science centre since 2008 on various projects, including the South Texas Research Facility, the Center for Oral Health Care and Research, the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies.

These projects also include a connector bridge to the research facility, and the recent construction of the Multispecialty and Research Hospital with a skybridge to the Mays Cancer Center.

Facilities and Capital Planning vice president and chief facility planning officer Michael Charlton said: “The capital investments made at the Mays Cancer Center during the past two years have transformed the patient care experience by creating several new specialty clinics.

“This challenging project required teamwork from the clinical leadership of the Mays Cancer Center, Capital Projects, the UT Police Department and Environmental Health and Safety.

“The team really came together to make these patient safety improvements.”
