Modbury Hospital in South Australia will undergo a significant expansion with an investment of A$117m ($78.4m) that would see the addition of a Mental Health Precinct and a cancer centre.

Designs have been released for the expansion project, which will be one of the largest upgrades to be ever undertaken in the history of the hospital.

The expansion project will feature a specially designed Mental Health Precinct that includes 24 mental health rehabilitation beds and a 20-bed Older Persons Mental Health unit.

This precinct will increase the hospital’s overnight bed capacity by 20%.

Expected to be completed by December 2025, the mental health rehabilitation beds will cater to adults requiring extended hospital stays for therapeutic care.

The mental health rehabilitation unit will include two 12-bed pods with interview rooms, a gym for community-based rehab, kitchens, communal dining areas, two clinical open-plan offices, external courtyard spaces, , and a staff lounge.

The Older Person’s Mental Health unit is intended for those aged 65 years and above. It will be divided into a 12-bed open pod and an eight-bed pod for high dependency clients.

The unit will include interview rooms, sensory modulation rooms, family and visitor rooms, internal courtyard spaces, and a lift to the lower ground level leading to a landscaped area.

Marking the reintroduction of cancer services at Modbury Hospital, the new cancer centre will feature 12 chemotherapy chairs, seven outpatient consulting rooms, and three interview rooms to support nursing, pharmacy education, and clinical trials.

This centre will complete in December 2025.

The expansion project will also feature a five-storey multideck car park, aimed at addressing the longstanding parking availability issues. It will have a capacity to accommodate over 300 vehicles.

The car park is slated for completion in September 2025.
