Canada's Ontario Government has announced the completion of a major redevelopment at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The Ontario government invested C$383m ($277m) for the modernisation project, which is claimed to be the hospital’s largest-ever renovation.

As part of the project, around 323,000ft² of the hospital was revamped to establish expanded units and spaces, such as an expanded emergency department and an intensive care unit (ICU) with 36 new beds.

This renovation is set to improve patient care in various departments, particularly for those undergoing critical life-saving surgeries, emergency care, and cancer treatment.

Apart from an expanded emergency department and ICU, the extensive renovations have resulted in the redevelopment of 19 operating rooms, which includes the addition of two new facilities.

Besides, the medical/surgical inpatient unit has been expanded by 28 beds, the hospital kitchen has been renovated, and a separate, modern space has been created for the ambulatory oncology programme.

Sinai Health president and CEO Dr Gary Newton said: “Mount Sinai Hospital plays a vital role in our health-care system. The expansion and modernisation of Mount Sinai’s facilities was essential to provide new and expanded care for the people of Toronto, and specialised programmes for all Ontarians.

“We thank the Ontario government for this investment in enabling Sinai Health to create state-of-the-art spaces and services that will serve our communities today and in the future.”

EllisDon Capital secured the contract for the hospital's redevelopment in 2017.

The latest redevelopment project is part of the Ontario government’s initiative, 'Through Your Health: A Plan For Connected and Convenient Care', aimed at connecting people with the healthcare they need promptly.

This plan includes constructing new hospitals to enhance community services and reduce wait lists and times.

Ontario Deputy Premier and Health Minister Sylvia Jones said: “We are excited to mark the completion of the largest redevelopment in Mount Sinai Hospital’s history, ensuring families across the Toronto region are provided with the right care, in the right place, for decades to come.”
