MSF completely resumes services at Haiti’s Tabarre Hospital

The hospital provides medical care for traumatic injuries and severe burns and has an emergency department.

August 29 2023

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has completely restarted medical services at Tabarre hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, following a suspension of admissions due to an armed intrusion in July.

The armed intrusion forced MSF to shutter the hospital temporarily.

The hospital provides medical care for traumatic injuries and severe burns and has an emergency department that treated 2,000 people in 2022.

More than 20 armed individuals had entered the hospital in July, threatening MSF staff and abducting a patient.

This incident is part of a series of violent events that led to the closure or temporary suspension of MSF facilities in Port-au-Prince.

MSF head of mission in Haiti Mumuza Muhindo said: “MSF is committed to Haiti and its people.

“That is why we continue to have discussions with all stakeholders and armed groups, including law enforcement forces, to ensure that conditions allow us to continue our services and work safely in Tabarre.

“Our message to everyone carrying a weapon in Haiti is clear: respect for health facilities, patients and staff is non-negotiable.

“The survival of the Tabarre hospital will depend on everyone abiding by this.”

MSF has been providing medical assistance in Haiti since 1990 and responded to significant disasters, including the 2010 earthquake and subsequent cholera outbreaks.
