A multi-speciality healthcare facility has been inaugurated on La Digue Island, Seychelles, as reported by wam.ae.
The La Digue Hospital was opened by Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan and established with a contribution from Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, a women's rights advocate in the UAE who is also known as the Mother of the Nation.
As the island's first multi-speciality hospital, the facility will provide physical therapy, general medicine, dental treatments, audiology, ophthalmology and emergency medical assistance services.
It comprises operating and recuperation rooms, wards for children and female patients, a natural childbirth room, isolation rooms and labs.
Other features include units for kidney dialysis, women's maternity care, ultrasound, cardiology, medical gas, medical sterilisation and medical waste treatment.
The hospital was built under the directives of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and supervised by the ruler’s representative in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafrah Region, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Its development required a total investment of more than AED25m ($6.81m).
The opening ceremony was attended by officials from the UAE and Seychelles, including the Emirates Red Crescent acting secretary-general Hamoud Abdullah Al Junaibi.
wam.ae reported that the project is in line with the UAE's goal to assist friendly countries in critical sectors such as healthcare.
The hospital was built to international standards and will provide medical services for nearly 3,000 patients each year.
Al Junaibi said the opening of the hospital represented the 'deep-rooted ties' between the UAE and Seychelles and was the outcome of 'strong cooperation and partnership' between the two countries.
He said: “This project helps realise the UAE's strategy of sustainable giving through the implementation of ambitious developmental programmes and projects that have a profound impact on infrastructure development and the provision of essential services to friendly nations.
“The UAE always strives to enhance its humanitarian efforts and initiatives in Seychelles.”
