New pathology lab opens at Nepean Hospital

The facility is a key component of the A$1bn redevelopment of Nepean Hospital.

August 09 2023

A pathology laboratory equipped with advanced medical technology has been inaugurated at Nepean Hospital in Kingswood, New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

The laboratory marks a part of a A$29m ($18.99m) investment in healthcare facilities across western Sydney and regional NSW.

The facility is a key component of the A$1bn ($654.76m) redevelopment of Nepean Hospital and was officially opened by NSW Health Minister Ryan Park.

This laboratory is claimed to be among the first to feature advanced chemical pathology analysers in NSW Health Pathology laboratories.

It will conduct common tests such as liver and kidney function assessments, as well as diabetes monitoring.

The expanded facility is said to be 1.5 times bigger than its predecessor, incorporating the latest equipment to improve testing procedures and efficiency.

Nepean Hospital will get new chemical pathology analysers as part of the A$29m ($18.99m) initiative, along with several other facilities in the region, including Auburn, Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Mount Druitt, and Westmead Hospitals.

This investment focuses on automation technology to enhance sample movement and processing in larger laboratories.

Completion of the pathology laboratory enables the commencement of construction for Nepean Hospital's stage two building, which will feature an adult intensive care unit, renal services, medical imaging, and over 100 inpatient beds.

The Nepean Hospital redevelopment is taking place in two stages, with stage one already operational since 2022.

Stage two construction is ongoing and slated for completion in 2026.
