North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), a Level-I trauma centre and quaternary care teaching hospital in Manhasset, New York, US, has announced the completion of the Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion.
Completion of this $560m project comes after a decade of planning.
The new 288,000ft² pavilion comprises 18 operating rooms (ORs), including three hybrid rooms equipped with advanced imaging, and 132 intensive care rooms (ICUs).
Petrocelli Pavilion's hybrid ORs will enable complex surgeries to be performed, integrating traditional operating spaces with image-guided interventional suites.
It includes a hybrid OR designed for neurosurgical procedures and a 22-bed neurosurgical ICU, with the latest operative technology.
The latest expansion enhances the critical care capabilities at NSUH, which is part of Northwell Health. The new critical care units will begin hosting patients, with surgeries starting later this month, following the completion of intensive staff training.
The pavilion will also serve as the new home for the SABHH, offering a dedicated entrance for cardiac patients.
Based in New York, Skanska USA initiated the construction of the pavilion in April 2020.
For the construction, the company used drones with high-resolution cameras and sensors, 3D modelling, and 360° imaging technologies.
This project was supported by a ‘significant’ donation from Attilio and Beverly Petrocelli.
The addition of this new tower is expected to improve the hospital’s cardiac, neurosurgery, and transplant programmes.
With 756 licensed beds, NSHU treats more than 90,000 patients annually.
It offers a range of neurosurgery and multi-organ transplant services, as well as houses the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital (SABHH) and the Katz Women’s Hospital.
The Northwell Health Transplant Institute at NSUH includes Long Island's only heart, liver, and lung transplant programmes.
Northwell also has an academic neurosurgery department, which will now perform its 2,000 annual cases in the new pavilion.
Northwell president and CEO Michael Dowling said: “The Petrocelli Surgical Pavilion has been part of Northwell Health’s master plan for more than a decade. It took guile and determination to see this massive project through to completion.”
