Nonprofit healthcare network Northwell Health has opened a new $52m medical facility in Rego Park, Queens borough of New York to provide a host of healthcare services.

Spanning about 70, 000ft2, the facility is anchored by the largest outpatient cancer centre in the borough, and offers specialised care for various conditions.

The Northwell Health Rego Park facility features Northwell Health Labs, Vivo Health Pharmacy, Rego Park Imaging, STARS rehabilitation, and hosts specialists in various medical fields, including cardiology, gastroenterology, paediatrics, surgery, neurology, and more.

Northwell president and CEO Michael Dowling said: “Northwell has long been dedicated to serving the diverse population in Queens through our hospitals and by offering an array of specialty services, including bringing highly regarded transplant and cardiac programmes closer to home.

“Now we’re proud to extend Northwell’s world class cancer care to this vibrant multicultural community because cancer spares no ethnic group, it knows no bounds – and neither do our medical experts when it comes to treating this pervasive and deadly disease.”

The $32m, two-storey Cancer Institute at Rego Park offers comprehensive oncology care with 42 private treatment areas, medical/surgical oncology suites, and infusion centres.

The cancer centre provides coordinated, personalised care for various cancers, including breast, gastrointestinal, urologic, lung, head and neck, and gynaecologic cancers.

The new Rego Park facility communicates to patients in their own language, right from Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Hindi, to Bengali.

Northwell Health aims to serve diverse populations in the community, treating around 19,000 New Yorkers with cancer annually, and offers support services, clinical trials, and advanced diagnostic imaging.

Northwell Health Cancer Institute physician-in-chief and executive director Richard Barakat said: “We’re excited to open a new outpatient cancer centre in the heart of Queens to deliver the best cancer care close to where people live.

“Northwell is uniquely positioned to care for patients in Queens – one of the most diverse places in the country.

“To meet the needs of our patients, we have cancer experts and other health care professionals who speak numerous languages and are culturally sensitive to the populations we serve.

“Also, to remove any barrier to care, the centre has translated medical forms, brochures and other communications into several languages.”

Cancer patients at the Rego Park centre will have access to additional specialised services at Long Island Jewish Forest Hills Hospital and other Northwell Health facilities.
