US-based software company Phunware has extended its five-year contract with VHC Health, a healthcare provider in Virginia, to provide its digital front door application and location-based services.

Available on iOS and Android, the app offers wayfinding for navigation, integration with MyChart for patient information, virtual appointments, parking location saving, and directories for accessing physician and service information.

Phunware programme management and customer success VP Cody Wimbish said: “The adoption of a native, mobile-centric digital front door signifies the forefront of innovation that healthcare providers must embrace to revolutionise their approach to patient care.

“We are pleased that VHC Health's leadership has reaffirmed their partnership with Phunware, acknowledging its critical role in delivering an exceptional patient experience.”

According to the vendor’s website, Phunware's platform enhances healthcare access by offering indoor and outdoor navigation through mobile, web, kiosks, and digital signage, leveraging smartphone capabilities and location-based technology.

It guides users from home to various hospital locations and allows hospital staff to update easily on the editor portal.

Additionally, the MyChart integration provides real-time patient information.

Phunware's mobile app seamlessly integrates with Electronic Health Records including Epic and Cerner to reduce the complexity of managing multiple solutions and enhance the digital front door experience.

VHC Health senior vice-president and chief information officer Mike Mistretta said: “The renewal of our partnership with Phunware is an exciting step forward in our commitment to delivering a comprehensive suite of services through a unified mobile app for the VHC community.

“Beyond simplifying patient interactions, such as scheduling appointments and accessing remote telehealth services and provider messaging, this innovative wayfinding technology is a transformative solution that empowers patients to easily navigate the VHC campus.”

AI will become a key driver of medical device innovation

With only a few approved drugs currently available to treat DN by means other than regulation of blood pressure, innovator products that can treat by targeting other factors such as treatment of dyslipidemia, hypertension, or angiotensin inhibition, among others, is a key area of R&D in the DN space and is likely to pave the way for novel therapies in the near future. However, the treatment landscape is expected to remain unchanged due to limited availability of products in the late-stage pipeline currently.
