The government of Prince Edward Island, Canada, is set to break ground on the final two buildings of the region's Mental Health and Addictions Campus project.

Costing a total of $114m, the Mental Health and Addictions Acute Care Facility and Life Skills Centre will replace the existing Hillsborough Hospital.

The 168,000ft² facility is intended to offer advanced care for mental health, addictions and substance use while also providing life skills programmes to support patient recovery and independent living.

The other facility is the Mental Health and Addictions Wellness and Transition Centre, which will offer recovery-focused programming and transitional accommodations for those with complex care needs.

The $16m facility aims to help patients transition from hospital-based care to longer-term or supported living care.

Construction on both facilities is scheduled to begin early next year.

The Wellness and Transition Centre is expected to be completed in 2026 while the development of the Acute Care Facility and Life Skills Centre is due to be finished the following year.

The two facilities are part of the Mental Health and Addictions Capital Redevelopment Project, which aims to improve mental health and addiction services on the island.

Prince Edward Island Minister of Health and Wellness Mark McLane said: “The Mental Health and Addictions Campus will serve Island residents well into the future in many different capacities.

“Mental health and addictions touch the lives of every Island resident, whether it be a personal journey or that of a loved one, and this campus will offer tailored, wrap-around services in modern facilities.

“The services will have a strong focus on the needs of each patient with the common goal to improve their quality of life.

“There has been a tremendous amount of behind-the-scenes work into the development of this campus and it is very exciting to see it become a reality.”
