Interior Health and BC Cancer have announced the advancement in the procurement process with EllisDon and PCL Constructors Westcoast selected for the design and build phase of the new BC Cancer Centre at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, Canada.

The selection was made following a rigorous evaluation of their request for proposals (RFP) submissions.

The design-build team will be chosen by May next year, with construction anticipated to commence in summer 2025.

Valued at C$359m, this project is jointly funded by the provincial government and the Thompson Regional Hospital District.

A five-storey facility, the cancer centre will be located on the Westlands site of the hospital campus and will house advanced cancer treatment services.

It will feature radiation therapy planning, radiation treatment spaces, an outpatient ambulatory-care unit equipped with ten exam rooms and two consultation rooms for radiation therapy services.

Additionally, the centre will include an MRI suite and dedicated patient arrival and check-in areas.

One of the critical components of the new centre will be the three linear accelerator vaults.

These concrete structures are essential for containing radiation equipment used in cancer-patient treatment.

In an effort to honour local Indigenous communities, the centre will incorporate a sacred space for patients, caregivers, and staff, designed to facilitate traditional ceremonies.

The development also includes the construction of a new 470-stall parkade.

Furthermore, the hospital will undergo various upgrades to enhance cancer care services, including a modernised pharmacy and the relocation and expansion of the community oncology network clinic.

This clinic offers a comprehensive range of cancer care services, from initial consultations to various therapies and patient education.

Interior Health president and CEO Susan Brown said: “As we move through the procurement process for the new Kamloops cancer centre, we are another step closer to starting construction.”

“Together with BC Cancer, we are looking forward to bringing expanded cancer services to patients and their families in a new modern space.”
