Australia's Queensland Government is to open the seventh Satellite Hospital on Bribie Island, which will offer a range of healthcare services to patients in the local community.

The Bribie Island Satellite Hospital Minor Injury and Illness Clinic is due to open on 17 July and will operate seven days a week, providing urgent care for non-life-threatening conditions such as sprains, cuts, abrasions and broken bones.

The centre will also feature an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health hub, kidney dialysis services and outpatient mental health services, as well as a day medical treatment unit.

The Satellite Hospital's second phase will introduce a range of cancer care services, including oral health services and chemotherapy, and a dedicated team for senior rehabilitation and care.

This phase of the hospital is expected to open early next year.

Queensland Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services Minister Shannon Fentiman said: “We know our satellite hospitals are doing a fantastic job taking pressure off our emergency departments and providing more care for Queenslanders.

“Not only do they assist people with minor injuries such as sprains and cuts, but they also provide access to vital services such as dialysis and mental health support closer to home.

“And once cancer care services are available next year, the Bribie community will be able to access potentially life-saving chemotherapy treatment.”

The Bribie Island facility will be the seventh development in the Queensland government's A$376.9m ($253m) election commitment to improve local healthcare infrastructure across the state.

To date, the existing six Satellite Hospitals have collectively treated more than 90,000 individuals at their Minor Injury and Illness Clinics, as well as facilitated 40,000 outpatient appointments.

According to the Queensland government, the Satellite Hospital programme has significantly reduced the strain on nearby hospitals.
