Ross Memorial Hospital in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada, is set to undergo the expansion and renovation of its emergency department, aiming to provide enhanced care for the region's growing population.

The project will include a new mental health emergency services unit and a trauma room.

Ross Memorial Hospital CEO and president Kelly Isfan said: "Expanding our emergency care capacity is a key component of Ross Memorial Hospital’s plan to meet the ever-increasing service demands of our growing population.

“With close to 35,000 patients attending our emergency department in the last year, enhanced and expanded emergency facilities will play a crucial role in meeting our community’s needs."

The renovation will cater to the general emergency care demands and focus on mental health services.

The new mental health emergency services unit is expected to provide specialised care, enhancing patient safety and the hospital's ability to deliver timely care.

The new trauma room will be equipped with advanced infection control measures.

This will provide emergency department personnel with the essential room to more efficiently attend to patients in need of immediate treatment.

The planning and design phase of the expansion is currently underway, with the Ontario Health Ministry collaborating with Ross Memorial Hospital.

The timeline for construction will be finalised once the planning stage is concluded and the project's tendering and awarding procedures are completed.

Serving more than 80,000 local residents and 35,000 seasonal visitors, Ross Memorial Hospital is a critical healthcare provider in the region.

Ontario Health Minister and Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones said: “Our government is addressing demand for emergency care in the Kawartha Lakes region to connect more Ontarians to timely and convenient health care options, close to home.

“The expansion of Ross Memorial Hospital’s emergency department will allow people and families to continue to access the high-quality care they need, where they need it, for years to come.”

The Ontario government has also committed to investing more than C$2.3m for window replacements at the hospital, which is part of the broader efforts to upgrade the facility.

Ross Memorial Hospital board of directors chair Christine Norris said: "Ross Memorial Hospital is appreciative of the Ontario government and MPP Laurie Scott for sharing in our commitment to meet the growing demands on the healthcare services our community relies on.

“The commitment announced today is essential to supporting our dedicated team and hospital's mission to deliver on the promise of a better healthcare experience."
