Serres, a company specialising in designing and manufacturing surgical fluid management solutions for hospitals worldwide, has received a €1.8m ($1.93m) research grant from Business Finland.

This grant supports Serres' strategy to deliver sustainable solutions that aid hospitals in achieving net-zero emissions.

Serres focuses on implementing responsible practices in hospital operating rooms by ensuring that surgical suction and fluid disposal are both safe and environmentally sustainable. It provides solutions that reduce operating room waste and minimise the carbon footprint associated with fluid collection and disposal processes.

The funding will enable Serres to accelerate its efforts in developing future solutions where sustainability and clinical excellence are intertwined.

Serres Group CEO Nicke Svanvik said: “We are profoundly aware of our responsibility to assist hospitals in their transition to net-zero emissions, we also recognise the increasing demand for more sustainable solutions in the healthcare sector and our field of work.”

Serres' innovation programme addresses sustainability from multiple angles, including partnerships with research institutions, participation in relevant ecosystems, and also co-designing new solutions with hospitals.

According to Serres Product Group and innovation director Maria Lavonen, the company aims to ensure responsibility and sustainability throughout the entire value chain.

The grant ensures a comprehensive approach to the circular economy in Serres' area of expertise, enhancing the company's ability to build capabilities and competencies.

Business Finland senior adviser Eija-Riitta Hämäläinen said: “The project supports the company’s strategic renewal, positioning it as a leader in sustainable development by providing solutions for collecting hospital patient fluids and plastic waste.

“This highly ambitious research project combines various aspects within its work packages to achieve the desired results. Business Finland’s funding allows for implementing a large-scale project that improves international business prospects.”
