The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project in British Columbia, Canada is progressing, with the structural building and concrete pour now concluded.

Focus will now be on completing the exterior and interior aspects.

The project’s first phase includes a new pavilion, housing maternity, neonatal intensive care, mental health, and medical in-patient units. This pavilion is expected to complete in 2025.

British Columbia Minister of Health Adrian Dix said: “We are marking an important milestone of the new six-storey Phase 1 pavilion of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project.

“It’s exciting to see the progress as this project will support our ongoing work to strengthen health care in British Columbia and provide people in Burnaby and the surrounding communities improved access to care in a modern hospital.”

Additionally, the Support Facilities Building will undergo expansion and revamp, featuring ten upgraded operating rooms, emergency department improvements, and a new energy facility.

Phase 2, recently approved, will add a 160-bed inpatient tower and integrated cancer centre, contributing to a total of 399 beds across the campus.

The redevelopment, costing over C$2.4bn ($1.8bn), is funded by the Province, Burnaby Hospital Foundation, and BC Cancer Foundation.

Burnaby Hospital Foundation president and CEO Kristy James said: “Our community came together in such a strong way by helping raise over $30m to support Phase 1 of this redevelopment.

“I am certain that every one of our donors who contributed to this first step in our redevelopment is pleased to see the progress of the project, marked by this ceremonial event.

“The foundation shares our gratitude to all our donors, including exceptional support from the Beedie family, Jim Pattison and the City of Burnaby that have inspired us all.”

The Burnaby Hospital has been providing acute care since its launch in 1952.
