European engineering and architecture company Sweco has secured contracts to provide services for two hospital projects in Germany.

The company will contribute to the construction of a parent-child medical care centre at the University Medical Center Göttingen.

It is also involved in the expansion and refurbishment of the Martha-Maria Hospital, a teaching hospital in Nuremberg owned by Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The University Medical Center Göttingen is launching a redevelopment strategy that includes the construction of a parent-child centre designed for medical care.

Established in 1732, the hospital contains 40 specialist clinical departments and more than 1,600 beds.

Sweco's involvement extends to the second phase of construction, following its participation in the initial stage, which covered the emergency department, critical care and surgery centre.

The second phase involves multidisciplinary planning, including structural and civil engineering, building information modelling (BIM), and medical equipment and IT planning.

Services are due to begin this month, with the construction launch scheduled for 2027 and completion anticipated by 2030.

The Martha-Maria Hospital is undergoing a significant redevelopment and expansion in collaboration with St Theresienkrankenhaus, another teaching hospital owned by Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

The two hospitals agreed to merge earlier this year, creating a modernised facility with 470 beds.

Sweco's plan for the new building structure was informed by a deficiency analysis and feasibility study and is currently in full-scale project planning.

The company's involvement with the hospital started earlier this year and the project is expected to run until 2038.

It aims to improve medical care in the region while adapting to the evolving healthcare needs of its patients.
