Tamworth Hospital in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, has unveiled the first look of the expanded Nioka Palliative Care unit, which is set to double the number of palliative care beds, increasing the current capacity from six to 12 beds.

This development is a segment of the NSW government's $93m World Class End of Life Care programme, aimed at redeveloping and enhancing palliative care facilities statewide.

Tamworth Labor spokesperson Anthony D’Adam MLC said: “This is an important milestone, and I acknowledge the hard work of the community in advocating for this project.

“The new facility will be a valuable addition to Tamworth Hospital’s existing palliative care services.”

The existing Nioka facility will be extended to the main hospital building’s north-eastern corner.

Minister of Regional Health Ryan Park said: “The Minns Labor Government is committed to ensuring people with life-limiting illnesses receive the highest quality end-of-life care at the right time and in the right place.

“The expanded Tamworth Hospital palliative care facility will improve care and support for patients and families during what can be an extremely difficult time for all involved.”

The expanded unit will boast oversized palliative care bedrooms with en-suite facilities, staff areas, and flexible outdoor spaces, including three courtyards offering greenery and relaxation spots.

It will also feature a private outdoor area and an overnight room for additional family members.

The expansion is informed by extensive investigations across the hospital campus, incorporating community and staff input to optimise operational efficiency and promote collaborative care with shared services.

As the planning and design phase for the Nioka unit continues, further stakeholder consultation is planned.

The construction timeline will be established following the completion of the design phase and the appointment of a construction firm.

Hunter New England Health's infrastructure, planning and sustainability executive director Ramsey Awad said: “The expanded palliative care unit at Tamworth Hospital will provide a comfortable and home-like setting to deliver the very best clinical care and emotional support.”

In related news, more than 800 individuals have commented on the concept design for the $558m redevelopment of Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital.

The community, healthcare staff, and stakeholders engaged with the project via the website, in-person, and online sessions, following the release of the design earlier this year.

The engagement summary indicates that the design sessions, held over four weeks, attracted more than 370 community members and nearly 400 Albury Wodonga Health staff.
