Tampa General Hospital (TGH) in Florida, US, has partnered with Nuance Communications, a Microsoft subsidiary, to implement AI tools.

This move aims to alleviate the administrative load on physicians and streamline patient care delivery.

As a result of the collaboration, over 500 physicians associated with TGH will start using Nuance’s Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Copilot platform to boost their productivity.

DAX Copilot is a voice-to-text transcription service that distinguishes voices, records patient histories, identifies critical observations, and summarises key points.

This AI-driven ambient listening solution can securely captivate patient encounters, covering observations, symptoms, and experiences and within seconds transform these multi-party conversations into detailed, specialty-specific clinical summaries.

The system works smoothly with the platforms already in use at TGH and meets federal HIPAA requirements, stated the hospital.

Earlier this year, the technology was integrated into the Epic electronic health record system.

As per studies cited by TGH, DAX Copilot slashes documentation time by 50%.

Approximately 75% of physicians using the technology are found to have reported a decrease in burnout and fatigue symptoms, while 85% of patients feel their physician is more ‘personable’ and ‘conversational’.

TGH president and CEO John Couris said: “With the help of AI, we’re easing the burden of documentation on providers and, in turn, giving them the ability and the additional time to focus on our top priority — our patients. Its initiatives like these set Tampa General apart from the rest and contribute to the world-class care we deliver.”

Last month, Intermountain Health deployed DAX Copilot at its facilities.
