Tampa General Hospital (TGH), along with Lifepoint Health and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, has announced the opening of the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital in Florida, US.
It is said to be the inaugural and sole freestanding behavioural health hospital affiliated with an academic medical centre in the state.
Located in the Tampa Medical & Research District, the facility is the result of a joint venture between TGH and Lifepoint Health’s business unit Lifepoint Behavioral Health.
Tampa General Hospital president and CEO John Couris said: “This facility is more than just a hospital—it is a beacon of hope for patients and their families, offering compassionate, personalised care provided by world-class academic-based physicians with access to the latest research and cutting-edge technologies.”
The Florida Health Sciences Board, which governs Tampa General Hospital, approved the construction of the new behavioural health hospital in February 2022.
Available for the public next month, the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital spans nearly 83,000ft².
The hospital, featuring 96 inpatient beds, will offer 24-hour inpatient treatment, including medication management, safety planning, and both group and individual therapy.
Over the next few months, the facility plans to expand its services to include partial hospitalisation and outpatient treatment.
A team of academic-medicine-based USF Health psychologists and psychiatrists, working alongside Tampa General therapists and nursing staff, will deliver personalised treatment plans.
Behavioural health expert Doug Leonardo has been appointed as the president and CEO of the TGH Behavioral Health Hospital.
Leonardo said: “The TGH Behavioral Health Hospital will transform the landscape of behavioural health services in Florida, ensuring that individuals and families receive the support they need for mental wellness and recovery.”
As a designated behavioural health teaching hospital, it will offer practical learning experiences for medical students and residents from USF Health Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at the Morsani College of Medicine.
