Goldman Sachs and Rothschild & Co have emerged as the top mergers and acquisitions (M&A) financial advisers by value and volume, respectively, in Europe for the first half (H1) of 2024, according to GlobalData’s financial advisers latest league table.

GlobalData’s Deals Database has reported that Goldman Sachs topped the rankings in deal value while Rothschild & Co led in the number of deals advised on.

Goldman Sachs secured the top position by advising on deals worth $44.1bn.

Rothschild & Co, on the other hand, advised on 88 deals, the highest by volume among its competitors.

Morgan Stanley was the second most valuable adviser, involved in deals amounting to $31.7bn.

Lazard followed closely with $30bn and UBS with $27.1bn. Rothschild & Co also made it to the list in terms of value, with $24.7bn.

GlobalData lead analyst Aurojyoti Bose said: “Goldman Sachs registered a notable jump in the total value of deals advised during H1 2024 compared to H1 2023 and, resultantly, there was also an improvement in its ranking by value. Involvement in $13bn deals during H1 2024 helped Goldman Sachs register improvement in value and occupy the top spot.

“Rothschild & Co was the top adviser by volume in H1 2023 and managed to retain its leadership position in H1 2024 as well, despite registering a year-on-year (YoY) decline in the number of deals advised by it. Apart from leading by volume, Rothschild & Co also occupied fifth position by value during H1 2024.”

In terms of deal volume, PwC took the second spot with 57 deals.

Lazard was involved in 47 deals while Ernst & Young and KPMG were tied, with each of them advising on 46 deals.

GlobalData’s league tables are based on the real-time tracking of thousands of company websites, advisory firm websites and other reliable sources available on the secondary domain. A dedicated team of analysts monitors all these sources to gather in-depth details for each deal, including adviser names.

To ensure further robustness to the data, the company also seeks submissions of deals from leading advisers.
