Truveta has secured a contract from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to aid the public health agency’s research into paediatric and maternal health and viruses.

As part of this partnership, Truveta, a collective of 30 health systems, will deliver comprehensive electronic health record (EHR) data from more than 100 million patients to help.

The partnership will also allow CDC researchers to carry out surveillance of respiratory viruses, including Covid-19.

Truveta said that its real-world data will enable CDC researchers to gain novel insights into various aspects of SARS-CoV-2 such as variants, testing, vaccinations, re-infections, health impacts, as well as long-term effects.

This collaboration is further expected to boost the CDC's Covid response and surveillance capabilities by providing access to timely and representative patient-level data for statistically significant populations.

The CDC also emphasised the importance of having access to comprehensive and timely data to understand and combat public health threats such as the 2022 mpox outbreak or the coronavirus pandemic.

To obtain this data, the CDC leverages electronic healthcare data, which is crucial for promoting situational awareness, predictive modelling, and decision-making on strategic, tactical, and policy levels.

Using electronic healthcare data will also help track the spread and intensity of infections, identify highly impacted areas, and understand the spectrum of illness and disease burden, Truveta noted.

Moreover, it provides insights into risk factors for severe disease, outcomes, and the impact of public health threats on healthcare systems and communities.

Truveta CEO Terry Myerson said: “As the coronavirus pandemic began ravaging our country and the world, Truveta was formed in 2020 to bring together data that would enable faster answers and better care.

“This is a full-circle moment for Truveta to provide the CDC with regulatory-grade data and powerful analytics to enable scientifically rigorous research on Covid and other major public health concerns that improve care for us all. We are honoured that our unique data will help the CDC advance its mission of working 24/7 to save lives and protect people.”
