UK HealthCare, associated with the University of Kentucky, has opened a psychiatric emergency unit in an effort to provide immediate support for patients suffering from mental health crises.

The Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing (EmPATH) unit is claimed to be the first facility of its kind in Kentucky.

Located on the campus of Eastern State Hospital, it follows a new model for emergency behavioural healthcare.

Eastern State Hospital is a vital psychiatric care provider managed by UK HealthCare for adults in a 50-county area of Kentucky, with 195 acute care beds.

The EmPATH unit is intended to enhance the standard of psychiatric emergency care in the region.

EmPATH is a collaborative effort between UK HealthCare, New Vista and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services that aims to introduce a new model of emergency behavioural healthcare in Kentucky.

The EmPATH unit covers 11,000ft² and can accommodate up to 12 patients, offering care plans that range from outpatient services to inpatient admission.

Its design features open spaces with comfortable seating, designed with the aim of fostering a supportive environment.

Patients admitted to the unit are treated by a multidisciplinary team that includes psychiatrists, social workers and nurses.

According to UK HealthCare, some studies indicate that 60-70% of patients visiting an EmPATH unit return home within 24 hours, with a high likelihood of continuing care.

University of Kentucky health affairs co-executive vice-president Robert DiPaola said: “The EmPATH model is a game-changer for mental health care, and we are so proud to be the first in the state to open this unit.

“For many, seeking care for a mental health issue can be difficult, frustrating and even frightening.

“With EmPATH, we’re using a proven, evidence-based approach that allows our behavioural health team to provide fast, appropriate evaluation and care that’s easier for patients to access in an environment conducive to healing.”
