Region Västmanland and Swedish construction company NCC have agreed on a Skr2.5bn ($247.5m) sub-project for an emergency hospital in Västerås, Sweden.

The deal is the third of four sub-projects for the new emergency hospital, which is due to begin treating patients in 2030.

It includes completing the shell, preparing the indoor environment and installing technical systems.

NCC's partnership with Region Västmanland began in August 2021, when the construction company was first contracted for the hospital's development.

The third sub-project will involve coordination to ensure the hospital's technical systems are installed, enabling robust and flexible emergency care.

The emergency hospital will offer a range of facilities, including surgery and radiology rooms, an emergency clinic, maternity wards, intensive care units, various other clinics and ward beds.

Works on the sub-project are due to begin immediately and expected to finish in 2028.

The order for the sub-project will be registered under the NCC Building Sweden business area for the third quarter of this year, with the hospital project's overall budget currently standing at around Skr6.8bn.

NCC Building Sweden head Niklas Sparw said: “In this sub-project, we are making extensive and critical preparations for the medical devices that will be installed in the new emergency hospital.

“It places major demands on both coordination and construction expertise for us as a contractor.

“Our good relationship with Region Västmanland is crucial as we now continue into the next phase of this important project.”

Based in Stockholm, NCC focuses on handling complex construction processes, employing 12,200 people in total.

The company's operations include building and infrastructure project contracting, asphalt and stone materials production, and commercial property development.

Last year, it secured a contract to refurbish and expand the operation and surgery ward at Northern Älvsborg County Hospital in Trollhättan, Sweden.
