Canadian digital healthcare company WELL Health Technologies has set up a dedicated public sector group that aims to increase technology enablement within public health systems and large-scale enterprises.

The initiative seeks to combine and deliver product offerings that meet the distinct needs and scale of the public sector.

The public sector group will capitalise on WELL Health Technologies’ existing operational strengths, which include Canada's physician-centric technology platform and domestic outpatient clinic network.

WELL's comprehensive public sector product suite includes technology and care providers, a virtual care platform and various productivity applications designed to streamline healthcare delivery.

The creation of the public sector group is also in line with Ottawa's recent allocation of C$46.2bn ($34.3bn) to modernise the health system at federal and provincial levels to address the growing emphasis on digitising healthcare.

WELL's chief product officer Shane Sabatino will serve as the Public Sector Partnerships head of the new group.

Sabatino said: “The formation of this division is a clear demonstration of our interest in supporting public health. This isn’t just a job for us, it’s a passion and a privilege to serve and support public health.”

Sabatino will work with WELL’s chief operating officer Amir Javidan, who is overseeing the public sector division.

Javidan said: “Given the unique strengths of our digital and clinical operations, we believe we have the products, services, and ability to deliver industry-leading ‘made in Canada’ solutions that will allow public health to support their healthcare providers and allow them to offer the best patient outcomes possible.”

The development comes after WELL's subsidiary OceanMD secured a five-year C$38.5m contract with the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) to provide eReferral secure messaging, eConsult, eOrder solutions and smart forms to support British Columbians.

This contract complements existing agreements with the provinces of Ontario and Nova Scotia, expanding WELL's footprint in the public healthcare space.
